Research & Sustainability

Science-Led. Ocean-Positive. Scalable.

At Offshore Shellfish, sustainability is embedded in how we farm — and independently measured through long-term scientific research. You can read more about it here in the Ropes to Reefs Project

Our mussels settle naturally on specially designed ropes suspended in the water column. They feed exclusively on naturally occurring plankton, requiring:

  • No feed
  • No fertiliser
  • No freshwater
  • No antibiotics

This makes rope-grown mussels, particularly those grown offshore, one of the most resource-efficient and climate-aligned sources of animal protein available.

Climate Contribution

Mussels contribute to low-carbon food production in two key ways.

First, they produce premium protein with an exceptionally low carbon footprint — confirmed through Life Cycle Assessment studies.

Second, their shells are formed through biomineralisation, a natural process that converts dissolved carbon and minerals in seawater into calcium carbonate. This locks carbon into a stable shell structure while producing highly nutritious seafood.

As global food systems transition toward net zero, offshore mussel farming offers a scalable, nature-based solution.

13 Years of Independent Research

Since operations began in Lyme Bay, the waters and seabed around our offshore sites have been studied by scientists at the University of Plymouth’s Marine Institute.

This long-term research programme — including multiple PhD projects and the Ropes to Reefs initiative — examines how offshore mussel farming interacts with the marine environment.

The findings are increasingly positive.

Our suspended mussel lines create complex three-dimensional habitats in the water column, supporting fish, crustaceans and other marine life. Research indicates these structures can function similarly to artificial reefs — increasing biodiversity, providing refuge habitat and delivering wider ecosystem benefits.

In this way, our farms are not only producing food, but contributing measurable ecosystem services.

Certified & Accountable

Our commitment to responsible aquaculture is independently verified through:

  • No feed
  • No fertiliser
  • No freshwater
  • No antibiotics

These standards, combined with continuous environmental monitoring and academic collaboration, ensure full traceability, regulatory compliance and transparent ESG performance.

Sustainable at Scale

True sustainability must operate at commercial scale.

By combining offshore engineering, long-term scientific validation and ultra-low carbon protein production, Offshore Shellfish demonstrates that aquaculture can move beyond minimising impact, and begin actively supporting ocean health.

Offshore Shellfish is a family run business, founded by John and Nicki Holmyard, who have been involved in the mussel and seafood industries for 30 years.

Offshore Shellfish are building the UK’s first large-scale fully offshore, rope cultured mussel farm off the coast of South Devon.
